How can I help my child prepare for their first dental visit?

Explain that the dentist will count their teeth and check their smile. Avoid negative words like 'pain' or 'needle' and bring a familiar toy for comfort.

For Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide ( “laughing gas” ) sedation during dental treatment is designed to reduce pain, fear and anxiety
and help with excessive gag sensitivity. Your child remains awake and aware of the treatment procedure.
Common Risks
Nitrous oxide sedation is generally very safe. The most common side effects include vomiting, nausea, lightheadedness.
To ensure your child’s safety,
1. Avoid food and drink for at least 2 hours prior to treatment
2. Inform your dentist if your child has any medical problems, allergies or is unwell
3. Your child will be assessed for fitness to leave the dental clinic after the procedure. This is done by your dentist.
4. Your child should attend the treatment and leave the clinic accompanied by a responsible adult caregiver.
What can I expect after nitrous oxide sedation?
On the day of the procedure, avoid any vigorous activities (e.g. swimming, cycling, climbing) as your child may feel unsteady due to the effects of sedation. Quiet play/rest is preferred.
Your child may eat and drink after treatment with cool soft food preferred initially.

If local anaesthesia (numbing injections) were administered, parts of your child’s mouth may still be numb. Watch that your child does not accidentally bite his numb lips, cheeks or tongue.
