Congratulations on taking this exciting step towards a healthier smile! Getting braces is a big decision, and knowing what to expect can make the process smoother.
Here are the top 10 important things to keep in mind as you begin this journey.
1. Be Kind To Yourself : Give Yourself An Adjustment Period
Expect some tenderness or soreness in your teeth and gums for the first few days after your braces are placed and after adjustments. This is completely normal as your teeth begin to move. Most people adapt quickly. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Stick to softer foods during this time.
2. Keep Your Teeth And Braces Clean
Braces create more surfaces where food particles and plaque can get trapped. Brush your teeth gently at least twice daily. Brushing after meals will additionally help to remove trapped food particles. Floss carefully using a floss threader/ orthodontic flosser and use an interdental brush to clean between your teeth and around the brackets. Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to cavities, gum disease, and staining.

3. Certain foods Can Damage Your Braces
Be mindful with your food choices. Avoid hard, sticky, and crunchy foods such as:
Nuts and hard candies
Ice cubes
Sticky candies, tapioca pearls, chewing gum
Fried foods with crispy batter
Whole apples and carrots (cut them into small pieces, or cook for longer!)
These foods can break brackets and wires, leading to extra appointments and prolonging your treatment.
4. Protect Your Mouth During Sports
If you participate in sports (e.g Jiu Jitsu, rugby, MMA) or other activities where there's a risk of impact to your mouth, consider wearing a mouthguard that can accommodate your braces.
5. Attend All Your Scheduled Appointments
Regular appointments are vital for the progress of your treatment. Your orthodontist needs to adjust your braces periodically to guide your teeth into their correct positions. Missing appointments delays your treatment completion.
6. Loose Brackets Or Wires Can Happen
Despite your best efforts, brackets can sometimes come loose, or wires can slide out of their intended position. You may notice a wire poking into your cheek, leading to discomfort. If this happens, remove any loose or broken components, keep it and contact our office for advice.

7. Orthodontic Wax Is Your Friend!
Orthodontic wax is a soft, mouldable wax that can be placed over brackets or wires to protect your cheek from potential abrasion. Carry some with you, especially in the beginning and when you travel, and don't hesitate to use it for relief.
8. Your Treatment Timeline Is An Estimate
The estimated length of your treatment plan is based on your individual needs. While we strive to stay on schedule, various factors can influence the duration, including your cooperation with instructions, your body's response to treatment, severity of the issue and any unexpected issues that may arise.

9. Wearing Your Retainers Is A Must!
Congratulations, your braces are off! But the journey does not end here. Teeth tend to move. To keep your beautiful smile, we will design retainers that help to hold your teeth in their new, aligned positions. Consistent retainer wear is crucial for the long-term success of your orthodontic treatment.
10. Don't Hesitate To Ask Questions
We are here to support you throughout your orthodontic journey. If you have any questions, concerns, or experience any discomfort that you're unsure about, please contact our office. We want to ensure your treatment is as comfortable and effective as possible.
